Pink Floyd are one of the first bands I think of when the word wank is brought up.

Interesting. I personally don't get the "self-indulgence" vibe from Pink Floyd's earlier work that I get from so many progressive bands. Dark Side of the Moon would be my primary example. Although I do not believe it's their best album, I do feel it's the most tightly written, to the point where every note truly is there for a reason.

Of course, that self-indulgence is not always a bad thing (but almost always is when taken to its utmost extreme)

I am very, very extremely picky with hip-hop. I pretty much dislike 90% of it. There's something about rapping most of the time that's very unappealing and a good mulch of it needs to have some form of cursing or any other miscellaneous suggestive content which is a massive turn-off.

Agreed, for the most part. Hip-hop at its best is fantastic. However, unlike many other genres, where the "average" just tends to be boring, I find the "average" hip-hop pretty unpleasant. The worst of hip-hop, of course, is excruciatingly painful.

Can someone try to tell me the appeal of bands like Fall Out Boy and All Time Low and their ilk? I keep on still finding fans of them, and I can't possibly comprehend why.

Not a fan of All Time Low, but I like Fall Out Boy for the energy and word play.

So like, I found out today that I can't really get into modern prog-rock (Marillion, Spock's Beard, etc.) and that surprises me, because I love progressive music (or, at least, I like to believe I do).

It's like, I've gotten so used to listening to progressive metal (Prog death, prog thrash, prog black, post-metal, etc.) that I expect everything progressive to sound like Opeth or In Absentia/Deadwing era Porcupine Tree that when I go to check out these prog-rock bands I go "Wait, this isn't heavy, something's not right, I don't like this".

And that... kinda bothers me.

Do you like pre-In Abstentia Porcupine Tree? Because if you want to get into modern prog, you might like their earlier works. And if you like old prog, Anglagard and Astra are two good modern bands with a classic sound.

If the problem is just a heaviness factor, I don't know. Perhaps just trying to get used to prog that isn't so heavy might help.

I like Fall Out Boy because they have insanely catchy songs with huge choruses. Doesn't really go much farther than that, honestly.

One of those times I'm glad I don't listen to the radio. I don't think I've ever heard the song in its entirety... and I still hate it (along with most of Maroon 5's discography, a fair bit of which I have heard in its entirety, sadly).

I used to have an album by The Church before my HD crashed, but I forget which one. No matter, I'll just grab one now that my internet is working for the moment.

Agreed, for the most part. Hip-hop at its best is fantastic.

Definitely, generally when I find some good Hip-Hop to listen to, it's usually excellent to say the least.
