I think that labeling/categorizing a movement plays a big part in making it a short fad. Chillwave and Witch House, for example, are "dead" subgenres, but it's not like they became irrelevent or unenjoyable. I don't really understand this "new" stuff anyway, I'm always a little bit behind the wave, the uncool one still listening to 2011's albums.

I think the "cool" ones are wondering when they'll ever get the time to get to all the albums they want to listen to, regardless of what year they came out. To think I'll ever "fully catch up" is a sheer act of hubris.

I'd agree with that. I don't think I'd put any of either of their albums over Lateralus, but both have stronger overall discographies for what they're doing (have to put that qualifier in there, as Puscifer is a project done clearly with tongue firmly in cheek).

That's a good point. Lateralus on a whole is probably a more substantial (and iconic) release than anything else Maynard's done, but he just seems more at home in the other two projects. TOOL has a narrower vision because he has several other band members and their respective tastes & visions to contend with. Maynard doesn't seem like a narrow kind of person, musically. Hell, didn't he name his son after Devo?

I have no idea why I still post here. I guess I have plenty of time and it's nice to roll with old habits.

I think that's one of the main reasons why I stick around because I've been here for so long. That and there's some interesting discussion that still occurs here and there like the yearly music threads, your album thread, and the music recommendation thread.

I like the Wipers; they do the same kind of thing early Flipper does but a bit more cohesive, I like them.

I never made the connection before, but now that I think about it, I can see the similarities.

On another note, updating the last.fm scrobbler forced me to finally update my iTunes. I don't really like the new version, but if updating it allows me to properly scrobble stuff, then so be it.

I don't even get why everyone hates chillwave, I thought Neon Indian, Toro Y Moi, and Washed out were all the **** back when they first released their debuts. Granted they've all morphed into something different, but I dunno, I don't get when or why it became uncool to like "chillwave" (other than that maybe the name could be dumb to people?)

I'd actually consider a lot of chillwave to be my favorite music released over the last 5 years actually, it's just there is a certain section of the internet that really dug into it with vitriol.

There is seriously so much great "chillwave" out there:

Clive Tanaka - "Neu Chicago"
Giraffage - "Feels"
Groundislava - "TV Dream"
Myth and Tropics - "Waikiki 71"
Neon Indian - "Terminally Chill"
Work Drugs - "Third Wave"

Backlash is nothing new, but in the Internet age it can happen in record time. I imagine it just comes with the territory of rapidly shifting culture and a mostly young audience.

I haven't gotten around to the new Toro Y Moi album, but based on the one song I have heard I'm definitely uneasy about his shift away from chillwave (though I never felt he fit into the category very cleanly to begin with).

I still jam the hell out of that Neon Indian debut in the car at night.

Toro definitely has solid roots in funk and pop music which I thought he needed to incorporate more of (and he really did well I think with songs like Rose Quartz and High Living).

Oh and the first Neon Indian album is one of my favorites of the last 13 years.

I really, really like both Neon Indian albums. Yeah, the first one's better, but I think the second one is great, too.

this is why I hate computer: I updated my scrobbler as well, after which iTunes would not open. It ultimately took a system restore to fix the problem. Gonna leave that update alone: the older version of last.fm scrobbler is still working for me anyway

I think I played the Neon Indian album once or twice. I just honestly can't remember if I do.

I still love the first one, though.

Yeah, I got rid of the Scrobbler because I had the same problem.

I think I'm going to do the same, it doesn't even work properly anyway and it's annoying, so I'm just going to get rid of it now.

Edit: Was able to revert back to the old iTunes and Scrobbler and everything seems to be back to normal. I'm not making the same mistake again in updating either one.
