No Hope for Heroes isn't bad from the few songs I've heard. They weren't around too long, but I'm going to grab their other free tracks on Last.fm.

RO: The video for Foolin' is the only good thing to come out of Devendra Banhart's last album.
Afraid nobody 'round here
understands my potato
They think I'm only a spud boy
looking for a real tomato
Devo - "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA"
For me, the only good thing to come out of Devendra Banhart's entire oeuvre is a deeper appreciation of Marc Bolan and Karen Dalton.

I admit I'm a little cynical about this. Most of the time that bands (myself included) post their influences, it's not really in the spirit of "If you like us you'll like these" so much as, "f you like these, you'll like us" or rather "we see ourselves in the same family tree as these well respected bands which we somehow actually don't sound like."
I hate doing the influence thing; always have. Always have to, anyway, since it's expected.
It would be much more impressive and informative to convincingly produce a list of "bands influenced by US" but I'm not sure how anyone would be able to do that without, well, lying. A lot.

Edit: Actually, Mark E. Smith probably has that very list in a notebook in his back pocket. Though he wouldn't use the words "influence" or "bands" so much as "thieving" and "b@st4rd plagiarists." He's cranky like that.

Precisely. For example, here are the influences of Coheed and Cambria, which they are really quite quick to talk about:Iron Maiden(Obviously),Thin Lizzy,King Crimson,The Misfits,At The Drive in,Megadeth,3,Tool,Mahavishnu Orchestra,The Police,Bad Brains, and Jane's Addiction. Looking at those,no one could ever pin down how they sound just by looking at it.
