Don't worry, my statement was kinda meant to be taken jokingly (in the same way yours was). I mean, what I said was meant to be true, but yeah, you get the point.

    That's absolutely awful, though.

Daydream Nation is almost the Velvet Underground & Nico of the 80's. Not for everybody, but pretty much at the peak of its genre. The best advice I can give is to ignore the hype... and that goes for pretty much everything.
I can't figure it out, really. Maybe it's just noise rock all together. Granted, I haven't heard much else, but like I said, it doesn't strike me as something I would really love. I guess on this last listen I got more out of it, but some of the songs seem to drag on with the long noisy breakdowns at the end a lot. And the vocals on some of the songs are a bit grating. I think I would like it more if most of the songs were closer to "Teen Age Riot". Admitidly, I like more of the songs by themselves, but the continuous SKREEEEAWRK hits me. And like you said, I don't really feel too much of an emotional connection with it. It seems like it's something that I'll like in time, but it will take another listen or two to be sure.

It's always disappointing for me when I hear craploads of praise for an album, then finally get around to getting it, and I end up with a lunchbag letdown.

But then again, it's also one of my greatest joys to hear praise for an album and find that it's all true. (Here's looking at you, The Stone Roses )

Well, the first two aren't really all that fantastic, but it does show your taste. It's definitely the noisy aspects of Daydream Nation that keep you from enjoying it, which is a shame, because it's as good as Noise-driven Alternative Rock gets, and Sonic Youth are so damn creative and imaginative in ways that you don't even have to be a musician to appreciate.

If Daydream Nation is too abstract or noisy for your ears then give Goo a shot.
