Well, the first two aren't really all that fantastic, but it does show your taste. It's definitely the noisy aspects of Daydream Nation that keep you from enjoying it, which is a shame, because it's as good as Noise-driven Alternative Rock gets, and Sonic Youth are so damn creative and imaginative in ways that you don't even have to be a musician to appreciate.

I can see Siamese Dream, I know not everyone is into the Pumpkins. But c'mon, everybody loves a good Smiths album. And I can totally recognize that Sonic Youth is high up there in their noisy alt style, and it's not that I don't like the album, I just don't really hear the unreachably high pedestal it tends to be put on in the alt rock community. I just generally prefer my alt rock a tad cleaner and more streamlined, with less krrruffpphhhhh and skkkrreeeeee.

And I am a musician, to boot.

If Daydream Nation is too abstract or noisy for your ears then give Goo a shot.

I was just reading up all about Sonic Youth and their different albums, and I heard Goo is where they start heading less noisy and more straight alt rock. Perhaps that'd be a better stepping stone for me, as I have only actually heard Daydream Nation myself. I guess I just wasn't impressed enough by it to make me want to search out more.

DDN isn't exactly Noise Rock, as that's more SY's earlier material, but it pretty much is one of the most fun listens in music, period IMO.
I have a feeling TRB would like Dinosaur Jr. a lot, due to how he feels about DDN.

I have heard a lot of good about DJr, but haven't really heard anything by them outside of their popular songs. Album reccs?

I feel like Daydream Nation is an album that, when trying to "get" it, needs to be listened to in the right mind frame. Once a person "gets" it, though, I'd say it's a fully enjoyable listen whenever one listens to it. I'll second the notion that Goo is probably easier for people unacquainted with Sonic Youth's style of music, too.

The other thing I will say is that Daydream Nation is one of the few albums I always get something new out of whenever I spin it, which is really remarkable.

On the topic of The Queen Is Dead, I'd put it up there with Daydream Nation as an absolutely essential alternative album, but for entirely different reasons, of course.

Yeah, usually when I'm listening to it, I've read something about and think "hmm, maybe I'll like it this time around." Could be doin it wrong.

However, I'm feeling in a bit of a musically open minded time right now. I do believe I'll give it another spin tonight and let you fellows know.
