So, megaupload's been yanked. 100 petabytes of the internet, poof.

I don't know all of the details yet but I'm hoping they pull through.

My gut reaction is that MegaUpload will be back on the internet in a radically restructured format, or we've seen the last of it. Regardless of what happens to MegaUpload, though, this is a rather big blow to SOPA/PIPA.

I think the investigation on Megaupload started in 2005, though I agree, the seizing itself had curious timing.

I'm not sure if we'll ever see it back up. It depends on how well they can defend themselves in court. While I can understand some of the claims the feds are making, the indictment reads like...well...out of touch people wrote it.

It's going to be interesting to see how courts handle it, because MU did honor takedown notices but were also aware of copyrighted material. I'm just hoping this case doesn't set a precedent for how to deal with infringing sites because nuking the entire site is a bit drastic. It's also going to be interesting to see if the legitimate users of the site can counter sue the feds for lost files and other damages, considering it went down without warning.

Hell, I didn't even use the site and know this is a big deal. This is one of the biggest copyright/piracy/online cases we've ever seen.

Oh, yeah, the investigation had been going on for a while (arrest warrants had apparently been put out two weeks ago). I just think that, given that the government was able to investigate and charge people under current laws, we may see people begin to think any extra legislation on the subject would be extraneous.

America reaching out to New Zeland, that's kinda frightening. I know joint stuff and all, but it's still unnerving to me.

Absolutely. Whenever that comes on the radio (gotta love satellite) road rage usually ensues.

RO: Digging into those goth-rock compilations Jungle Records put out...there's some excellent, excellent stuff on there, especially the third volume.

RO2: Bone Orchard is one helluva underrated goth band.
