Anyone listened to all of Metal Machine Music? I've only listened to bits and pieces of it... after 10 minutes of it, my ears hurt.

Probably not a good idea to use headphones.

I went on to start an argument about the Beatles being the same way, when he noticed he had lost the argument and tried to call me a hypocrite because i hate that the college football ranking system is based on coaches' opinions and not on record.
To be fair, though, while marketing for music was just as aggressive then as it is now, it was much more difficult to get into a position where you would be a viable marketing option 50 years ago. The Rolling Stones, I believe, reached their position because they were a genuinely talented group (though there was surely just as talented, if not more so, groups that got shafted for dumb reasons), where an artist today can often be marketed for having "the look".

Nonetheless, winning a Grammy isn't much more prestigious than winning a High School popularity contest. Just more people know about it.

this was the point i was trying to get across to my dad, because his "only good music sells well" argument pissed me off, of course he only listens to pre-90s rock and blues and that's about it, and he's also the person who thinks that the US went to war with Vietnam over oil, so its obvious he's just clueless

Hell, a lot of what we call "the classics" from the 60s and 70s didn't top the charts... some of it didn't even chart at all!

That was also in the days where AM radio had mainstream music and FM radio had experimental rock stations. That was the way radio was until about the late 70's/early 80's when Yuppies got full control of these stations and ran them as soulless one size fits all entities like the old AM radio stations were ran.

I like Metal Machine Music, actually. I would've responded earlier, but I just saw your post.

On an unrelated note, it turns out Lana Del Rey went to my university. I guess it makes sense, since she's from upstate New York.
