    Have you read Chandler's stuff? That's as essential as you can get though, so I'm guessing you have.

    I'm probably going to sound lame here, but A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was pretty damn good, though you've probably read it since sherlock holmes is probably entry level.

    Arthur Conan Doyle is good. If you wanted some shorter pieces to read, a lot of his short stories are really great. If you want novels, Raymond Chandler is good too.

    Looking more for noir or novels set in the 40s-50s, but I do like Doyle.
