I've always detested the term "dadrock" anyway. It's like the non-genre classic rock, only with even less meaning behind it.

I imagine in most instances dad rock strictly refers to blues rock, hard rock, and progressive rock from the late 60's and 70's. Psychedelic also sometimes applies.

Country rock and roots rock are probably the biggest ones, actually. I imagine The Eagles and Creedence Clearwater Revival are the epitome of dad rock.

Growing up, my parents taste definitely shaped an open-minded sensibility to some extent, but forums mostly made me actually openminded and eclectic. The link shows insight though.

I hate the term too. It just sounds so condescending, rude and distasteful, like it's trying to frame all the music that can be called or considered "classic rock" in some sort of negative way.

But on to the current subject. Since my parents are in their 50s, most of the music they listen to would naturally be from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. So that would fall around stuff like The Who, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, The Animals, The Beatles, Neil Young, Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin, B.B. King, Pink Floyd, and Genesis.

My dad in particular is more varied. He likes some big band music, a lot of folk (Nick Drake and Jim Croce in particular), and especially prog. He loves bands like Yes, Porcupine Tree, Marillion, Frank Zappa, ELP, King Crimson, and Wishbone Ash.

I do too, but try to not really care too much when I see it mentioned somewhere.

As far as the discussion about what music my parents are into, both aren't really into music a whole lot. my mom just listens to the radio whenever she's going somewhere and that's about it. My dad is a fan of Queen and "Bohemian Rhapsody" in particular because he's been playing piano for a number of years and can play it among other things.

Music parents like? Alright, I'll go.

My dad is pretty stuck in his ways, honestly. He'll tolerate some of the stuff I like, but anything too weird he dislikes. Clapton, Bryan Adams, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen, Andre Bocelli that kinda stuff, and not a whole lot else. He generally dislikes anything too heavy, although he likes the occasional Zepp song, and once told me he owned a Black Sabbath album, which I find a little hard to believe.

My mum's a little more open minded. She likes the same stuff, although she digs a little more weird and heavier stuff from the same era, ie Pink Floyd, Cream, Hendrix, etc. She's not really into anything too metal-oriented, but that's understandable. She's into folk pretty good, like Simon & Garfunkel, Dylan, Cat Power, even Nick Drake. She likes a good lot of the indie stuff I like, as well, but won't actively search it out. I've played Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, The Shins, and I dunno what else and she's always enjoyed it, so long as it's not too freaky.

So yeah, my mom's a lot more open minded, although she's always been far more artsy in all respects than my dad, whereas he's more numbers and logic.

I agree. I'd be hiding that liking of Black Dahlia Murder's music if I were him.

Your mom listens to Katy Perry, her credibility regarding making fun of singers is lost due to that.

Though in all seriousness, if he's getting ripped on for listening to the music of an artist he's trying to hide, he's not doing a good job hiding it.
Bands I'd love to see as DLC for Rock Band:

    Amorphis []
    Emperor [X]
