    While Twitter can be very useful as an information dissemination tool ... that doesn't change the fact that 90% of the tweets involve someone's cat doing something cute.

    Twitter proved its worth when its flexible API and simplistic update system made it usable in the Iranian protests. It allowed people who literally had their democracy stolen from them to organize and demonstrate when nearly every other source of communication was dead. It allowed people to tell their story and document a government attacking its own people. If it had been around in the 80s, Tienamen Square might have ended differently. If it had been around in the 40s, the Holocaust might have been prevented. For this reason, we can forgive that it is also used for Ashton Kutcher to tell us that he's eating $#@&ing cake.

    Oh, don't get me wrong: I'm not criticizing Twitter itself.

    Just the people who post about their cats.
