I can sort of see that; comedy is a very precarious genre for me. I'm almost never in the middle with comedy. I either find it funny (to varying degrees, of course), or it pisses me off unmercifully. A great example of the latter would be How I Met Your Mother. Not a terribly written show, but the jokes on the show annoy me so much that I feel like putting my foot through my television every time my brother decides to watch it.

We're talking comedy films? Okay. I saw The Dictator today, not sure why. Suffice to say that it wasn't very good. At all.

The entire idea of a despotic dictator in the middle of a nuclear/terrorism scare is already a trope that got old five years ago, and this film does nothing to change that. The "humour" derives itself from the main character being a dunce that somehow achieved national domination, him losing said domination and trying to adjust to the fact that he doesn't have power anymore, although his goal is to get it back. A lot of the jokes are Sacha Baron Cohen pulling off and naming trite stereotypes and general puerile, dirty jokes.

Comedy is subjective, but I found the film just wasn't trying at all. The thing about jokes is that they're only really funny once, and most of these jokes are recycled. The whole "foreigner coming to an unfamiliar America" gig was something Baron Cohen already did with Borat, and most of the jokes, near as I can tell (I never watched Borat) are basically the same sort of thing. The Dictator simply has nothing new, no impressive value. There was one half-subtle joke at the end of the film I laughed at, but most of the film is tired, repetitive and really boring. It's also strangely short. I entered the showing at 11:20, the previews went on for some time (some of the trailers were for films that look even worse than this one) and left at 12:50. The film seemed barely over an hour long.

Also, spoilers: Ben Kingsley is the bad guy.

I saw the trailer for The Dictator, and I still cannot explain for the life of me why I find that scene with him running the race funny.

Because it was pretty amusing. That was the only scene in the trailer that looked good to me too.

Anyway, being one of the last people on earth it seems that hasn't seen The Avengers, I went out and saw it. It didn't blow me away like people told me it would, but it was very good, it gets a solid 9/10 from me. Better late than never, but to add to the discussion from a few pages back, I thought the humor wasn't overdone but was very close to it. It was cleverly placed when it happened and was consistent. Certainly had a healthy balance of action and comedy throughout in my opinion.

I just finished writing an essay on gender performance (see gender performativity) in Weimar Germany cinema. Given that I was not so familiar with both Weimar cinema and Judith Butler's work, it was quite a tall order for me.

But yeah I rewatched Mäedchen in Uniform and it's such an amazing movie. Probably my favorite feminist movie when considering the historical context (pre-Nazi).

That's why I don't like numeral rating (well one of the reasons). 9/10 for a movie that didn't blow you away? Given that 10/10 should be a perfect movie (which is a nonsense concept), 9/10 is quite a ****ing score.

But anyway, it doesn't really matter, I don't think you're assuming it's like empirical data. Everybody knows it's all about personnal preferences.

For numercial scores for me personally I try to balance objective analyzation and subjective feelings. But that's me.

10/10 doesn't mean perfect, we can just as easily say it's a peak.
