Took the day off work yesterday and went and saw Prometheus and Moonrise Kingdom.

I had pretty high hopes going in to Prometheus and left feeling pretty let down. I love the Alien mythology, I love Ridley Scott and the trailers / teasers / viral videos for Prometheus were maybe the strongest of any movie release in the last 10 years. But despite some really interesting elements (Fassbender was amazing, loved the concept of meeting God, the set design and costumes were gorgeous, the score was interestingly atypical and the whole thing looked slick as all get out) it never felt like a complete piece to me. Maybe I expected it to connect more of the dots from the previous Alien films, but it felt a bit sloppy in how things were patched together, almost like the Star Wars prequels (plus: poor character motivation, little to no personality among the crew, mind boggling technical inconsistencies and dull creature design certainly didn't help). It was fine, just nowhere near as impressive as the groundwork they laid prior to release. 6/10.

Moonrise Kingdom, however, was a goddam delight. Very typical Wes Anderson, but if a director is going to be a one trick pony then at least it's a trick that I love. Great story about kids, family and love with some nice hints of magical realism thrown in. Beautiful cinematography and lots of outdoor shots, which isn't something I've really seen from Anderson before. Very deadpan, very dry and very funny performances from Bruce Willis, Ed Norton and Bill Murry. It may be a bit saccharine for some, but I always feel like there's just enough bitterness and tension that I eat Anderson's stuff up like candy. 8/10.

Oh shoot, HMXHenry posted in this thread :O

And wasn't the whole meeting God thing the central element of the first Star Trek movie?
My Web Dev teacher is a huge Trekkie (well, everybody in my school is) and told us all about it.

I watched Goodfellas last night in honor of the death of Henry Hill. Still the best gangster movie ever made and one of the best movies, period. 10/10

Well, that's what Veger wanted too. And the whale alien from part 4. Trek went back to the "god well" a lot.
