The Story
Proving that some things never change, this song about an impending stock-market crash was recorded back in 1975. Opening the album Katy Lied, this marked a turning point for Steely Dan: They were now strictly a studio project, not a band with a regular lineup.
Group founders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were now the only official bandmembers, and they used as many jazz as rock players to help them out. A few key figures in Steely history, including keyboardist and backup singer Michael McDonald, entered the picture at this point. After a July 4, 1974 show in Santa Monica, they swore off touring and wouldn’t play live again for nearly two decades. But from this point on, Steely Dan’s impeccable studio technique would become an essential part of their mystique.
Trivia
Studio perfectionist Walter Becker and Donald Fagen of Steely Dan were so unhappy with the tape machine they had to use for “Black Friday” that they refused to listen to the album when it was done.
Gameplay Hints
All it takes to beat the song on guitar is to get into the swing rhythm, and watch out for the zippers in the solos. Drummers should brace for the triplet ride cymbal/kicks at the end.
Where Are They Now?
Steely Dan toured in 2009, playing entire albums from the '70s era.
