The Story
Speck was formed towards the end of 2006 by designers at HMX. The band gelled while recording their an album within a single month as part of the RPM Challenge, though this version of "Conventional Lover" was re-recorded for Rock Band 2.
The song was not written about any specific science-fiction or comic-book convention, but about the general concept of seduction among the nerdy set. It was inspired by an offhand pun about a comic book reader having issues that didn't come in mylar bags. Speck has played live once, as one of eight HMX bands at the release party for the original Rock Band.
Trivia
Speck's first album, Working as Intended, was recorded using the Harmonix practice space and various low-cost home recording equipment. Most of the guitar parts were recorded while sitting on a purple sofa and half-watching the Food Network.
The name "Speck" was intended to refer to both writing design documents (or "specs"), and to "a general feeling of insignificance." It stuck because no one had any better ideas.
Gameplay Hints
When singing, remember that the vocals drop to a different, lower melody for the very last chorus.
Where Are They Now?
Speck are working (slowly) on a live set featuring a handful of new songs, at which point they might play a second show someday.
