The Story
This is the lengthiest song on Rock Band, clocking in at 9:56—so aren’t you glad we only used the short version? (We wouldn’t dream of making you play the same song for 20:20, which is what the long version on the Outlaws’ live album runs).
Southern Rock was already a well-established trend when this band busted out of Florida in the mid-'70s, with the requisite “more is more” lineup of two drummers, one bass and three lead guitars.
After Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane went down, the Outlaws would usually dedicate “Green Grass & High Tides” to their campadres in that band, working some of “Free Bird” into the lyrics. Guitarist Hughie Thomasson, who wrote the song, would wind up joining Skynyrd himself in the '90s.
Trivia
The title “Green Grass & High Tides” was borrowed from a vinyl-era greatest-hits album by the Rolling Stones.
Gameplay Hints
The guitar solo is designed to be a killer, with the dreaded section known as “the red, yellow and blue zigzag of death.”
KillAutumn suggests: “Go crazy on green, yellow and red and try to get as far as you can. Once you’re in red, deploy your Overdrive. With any luck, you’ll hit Overdrive in the break before you get to the zigzag.”
PathOgen suggests this detailed method: “Use your left index finger to hold down the green. Use your left ring finger to tap the yellow button. Use your right index finger to tap the red button. You’ll tap yellow once with the ring finger, and the red button twice with your right hand. Just figure out the beat, it’s not a constant one so slow it down and get in the groove!”
Where Are They Now?
Still on the road, a zillion lineup changes later.
