The Story

Released in fall 1970, “Hand Me Down World” was The Guess Who’s fifth top-20 single in a year and a half. It was also their first single since the departure of Randy Bachman, the lead guitarist who went on to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive. All of The Guess Who’s previous hits (“American Woman,” “These Eyes,” “Laughing,” and “No Time”) were co-written by Bachman and lead singer/pianist Burton Cummings, but “Hand Me Down World” was entirely written by the band’s new lead guitarist, Kurt Winter who’d played the song with his previous band Brother before joining The Guess Who. More political than their previous hits, “Hand Me Down World” pointed to the hard-rocking direction that the band’s new lineup would pursue through the '70s.

Trivia

What do The Who and The Guess Who have in common? Both have recorded the song “Shakin’ All Over.”

Gameplay Hints

All The Guess Who songs in the game have one thing in common: they all go off on a tangent toward the end of the song, particularly in Burton Cummings’ vocal improvs. Singers should be prepared to do some of the hardest work as the song reaches the fadeout.

Where Are They Now?

Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings have lately been touring together again, though not as The Guess Who - the band’s old rhythm section owns that name.
