The Story
When this song was recorded, 18-year-old singer Dolores O’Riordan was still living with her parents—and she was the oldest member of the band. At the time the Cranberries were living in low-rent luxury—sleeping in the back of a transit van where their gear was piled up.
Their second single, “Linger” didn’t do too well on the Irish charts initially; but America picked up on it sooner: the Cranberries first hit the US as Suede’s opening act, then came back to headline. “Linger” wound up making the US top ten, beginning a wild ride that the young band admitted it wasn’t prepared for.
O’Riordan’s motherhood led to her exiting the band in 2003; but they reunited for one short performance in Dublin during 2009. “Linger” was one of the three songs they played.
Trivia
O’Riordan once performed this song with Luciano Pavarotti; Princess Diana was reportedly moved to tears while watching.
Gameplay Hints
Singers shouldn’t be fooled by the song’s mellow vibe; there are some tricky inflections to get past during the chorus.
If you’re drumming, make sure your arms are limber: The part is effectively one long snare roll, and you’ll be glad it’s at least in a manageable tempo.
Where Are They Now?
The band broke up in 2003; O’Riordan released her solo debut in May 2009.
