The Story

We once saw this band play for about a dozen people at the Abbey Lounge, a beloved dive bar not far from Harmonix Central. At the time our thoughts were: Well, here’s another good band that probably won’t go anywhere; and: Too bad the bass player didn’t show up.

We were, of course, wrong on both counts: The bassist didn’t miss the gig (because there wasn’t one), and the band will never play a tiny place like our Abbey again.

We don’t think they played “Maps” at that pre-stardom show—in fact, we’re pretty sure they didn’t do any ballads at all—but it was the big surprise on their first full-length, a between-the-eyes pop song from a band originally known just for two-chord blasts.

By the way, at that first show Karen O was dressed down and we didn’t take her for a future fashion plate; shows how much we know.

Trivia

Both the White Stripes and Arcade Fire have covered “Maps” live.

Gameplay Hints

This is a tricky one on vocals. Nreality recommends forgetting the recorded vocals and focusing solely on the pitch indicator. Focus on the places where the pitch stays dominant—For instance, on the “Oh say, say say...” part, note how the pitch stays constant with just a little deviation at the end. Instead of trying to hit that down key, keep the pitch still and you’ll at least get most of the phrase.

On a less technical note, ScottytheBody recommends getting in touch with your feminine side, letting the tears run and singing like they don’t love him like you do.

Where Are They Now?

Gearing up for their next attack.
