The Story
The members of Interpol really don’t like it when people suggest they sound like British bands from the early '80s. So let’s just say they’re a stylist band with certain Anglophilic tendencies—hey, they can’t help it if the legendary British DJ John Peel was one of their early supporters.
Formed at New York University, the band first released this song on a Scottish indie label, and its underground success led to their signing with the important US indie label Matador (those pesky comparisons—mostly to Joy Division and the Chameleons—started turning up early, but didn’t keep the band from becoming a critical sensation).
The title most likely stands for Public Display of Affection, an ironic reference as it’s thought to be a breakup song.
Trivia
Guitarist/singer Paul Banks was known as “Inter-Paul” in high school, hence the band’s name.
Gameplay Hints
This song is all about keeping rhythm, so make sure your TV is calibrated! The guitar part is built on repetitive two-finger chords with a lot of single notes thrown in—but don’t fall asleep because just when you think it’s an endless sea of green/blue/green/blue, they throw some orange at you.
The song is easy to Gold Star if you save your Overdrive until your meter is full every time.
Where Are They Now?
Signed to a major label and going even stronger.
