The Story
Social Distortion's fearsome, tattooed frontman Mike Ness is long established as an underground hero, one who hit the brink of self-destruction and came back to tell the tale. The man even had part of his ear bitten off in a bar fight. So who better to cover a Johnny Cash song?
As they’re known to their fans, Social D caught the essence of Cash’s classic “Ring of Fire,” even if their version is a whole lot louder. Cowritten by Cash’s wife June Carter, “Ring of Fire” was one of the biggest hits of the Man in Black’s career, peaking at #17 in June 1963 (surprisingly, Cash never had a Top Ten pop single). The song’s dark romantic images (and its killer main riff) made it a favorite for rockers to cover over the years: Along with Social D, Blondie has also covered it.
Trivia
Social Distortion’s newest member is drummer Atom Willard, who has played in a trifecta of Rock Band bands: The other two were Angels & Airwaves and the Offspring.
Gameplay Hints
No major surprises but the song is a solid workout. On guitar, set your strum and watch for the super-fast 16th notes and chord changes.
Where Are They Now?
Social Distortion carries on with Ness at the helm.
