The Story

Steve Miller was already ten years into his career when he cut Fly Like an Eagle, the album that made him a mainstream star. And it marked a shift of gears, as the original Steve Miller Band was more of a psychedelic blues band; the early albums were full of longer tracks and trippy sound effects.

Miller had mixed feelings about the spotlight and spent the early '70s in seclusion, not making any albums for a few years.

When he came back—first with the Joker album and then three years later with Eagle—there was a new emphasis on catchy tunes and straight-ahead rock. Fly Like an Eagle produced three hit singles—the title song, “Take the Money & Run” and “Rock’n Me”—and he still plays nearly all of the album onstage.

Trivia

The second singer/guitarist in the original Steve Miller Band was Boz Scaggs, later a solo star. Another former member was bassist Ross Valory, later of Journey.

Gameplay Hints

Nothing too tricky on this one; most of the song is hinged to a chugging rhythm that’s infectious and fun to play. The only real challenge is in the repeated riff, which calls for fast strumming and drum fills; but there’s time to recover if you mess it up. If you can play Free’s “All Right Now” you can play this; as the two riffs aren’t far apart.

Where Are They Now?

Still out there. Still speaking of the pompatous of love.
