The Story
1964 was a banner year for British rock, of course beginning when a group called The Beatles took the USA by storm. The British Invasion was now on, and the hits just kept on coming.
But from the start, the Zombies were a little different: They weren’t outlaws like The Who and The Rolling Stones, nor were they instant superstars like The Beatles.Instead The Zombies were thoughtful types, with a sound keyed to Colin Blunstone’s breathy vocals and Rod Argent’s jazz-influenced keyboards.
“She’s Not There” made the UK Top 20 but was a bigger hit in America, where it hit Number One. Argent was only 19 when he wrote this song, only the second he ever wrote; and this classic tune was recorded at the band’s very first recording session.
Trivia
The Zombies’ original wasn’t the only version of ”She’s Not There” to hit the charts. Santana scored with a much different version in 1977.
Where Are They Now?
Singer Colin Blunstone and keyboardist Rod Argent stayed busy over the years; the latter led the ‘70s band Argent of “Hold Your Head Up” fame. Four of the five original Zombies (minus the late guitarist Paul Atkinson) toured the UK in 2008, playing their Odessey & Oracle album in its entirety.
