The Story
Supergroups were all the rage in the early '70s and Bad Company was one, with all four members having a strong pedigree: Singer Paul Rodgers was in the band Free, singing their hit “All Right Now.” Drummer Simon Kirke was also ex-Free, and the others had been in the bands Mott the Hoople (guitarist Mick Ralphs), and King Crimson (bassist Boz Burrell).
Added to that, Bad Company had the blessings of Led Zeppelin; they were the first band signed to Zep’s Swan Song label. Cocky rock’n’roll tunes were Bad Co’s specialty but “Shooting Star” catches them in a fairly thoughtful moment, an epic ballad of a rock’n’roll casualty. Rodgers said afterward that he was thinking of Jimi Hendrix when he wrote it.
Trivia
The first verse of “Shooting Star” mentions the Beatles…and Simon Kirke later performed this song as part of Ringo Starr’s band.
Gameplay Hints
If you like long guitar solos you’ll love this. Save your Overdrive for the chords in the closing solo, as you’ll rack up more points that way. And be sure to complete the Big Rock Ending for a chance at some Gold Stars.
Where Are They Now?
In a move that surprised many fans, Paul Rodgers—who was a favorite singer of the late Freddie Mercury—has joined the reunited Queen.
