The Story

The Beastie Boys turned heavily to classic funk and jazz on this song and its accompanying album Check Your Head, and they played most of their own instruments instead of sampling them: Adam (Ad-Rock) Horovitz plays the lead guitar and Money Mark is on organ (There is a Biz Markie sample in the song as well).

As always, the lyrics include a world of references: In one of the more exotic ones, jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris, who had a song called “Plug Me In,” gets referenced in the line “Just plug me in like I was Eddie Harris.” A well-known laundry detergent commercial is in the lyrics as well. So is rapper Spoonie G, and the street game Off the Wall.

Trivia

Marking a Rock Band first, this song appears in the game both straight-up and sampled: After the Beasties’ original you can play Beck’s “E-Pro,” which samples it.

Gameplay Hints

Barely two days after the release of Rock Band 2, someone already posted a bootleg video of them five-starring the vocals—while reciting the Declaration of Independence. Try at your own risk.

Where Are They Now?

In 1994 they claimed to have more rhymes than they had grey hairs. They now have a good deal more of both.
