The Story
Motörhead’s singer/bassist Lemmy has claimed that he wrote this song in ten minutes, but it became one of the band’s best-loved songs, celebrating the life of a band on the road. The subject matter was close to Lemmy’s heart as he used to be a roadie himself, for no less than Jimi Hendrix. That gig lasted about six months in 1967. And it came about because Lemmy was crashing in the same London apartment as Hendrix’s bassist Noel Redding. Lemmy remembered Hendrix as a well-mannered gentleman, and once described him as “a cat crossed with a spider.” On a less metaphorical note, Lemmy also said that Hendrix was “the king of sex, drugs and rock and roll,” and that he seldom lacked for company on the road.
Trivia
During 1967 Lemmy was a member of the Rockin’ Vicars, who played Yugoslavia and were one of the first rock bands to play behind the Iron Curtain.
Gameplay Hints
If you thought “Ace of Spades” was tough, you ain’t seen nothing yet. The sweeps are really a challenge, with some very quick fretwork. You’ll need to keep your hand nice and loose and rest it lightly on the frets in order to react faster, especially on the first few play-throughs.
Where Are They Now?
Still rocking, of course. One of Motörhead’s latest recordings is the Rock Band re-recording of “(We Are) The Road Crew.”
