Clambake

Bum bum bum! Friday June 15th was the second annual Harmonix Clambake. My day started with checking email to see if anyone wasn't able to make it at the last minute (one person was sick, a couple more were stuck in CA). Read full post »

Fashion Victim: Dressing Like A Rockstar

I don’t know anything about fashion. I feel I should get that out of the way right now. The best item of clothing I've ever owned was a pair of R2D2 Underoos that I had when I was 6, and I'm pretty sure that even back then I wasn't accessorizing properly. My co-worker and fashion-plate gal pal Naoko Takamoto (who is a member of Rock Band's own That Handsome Devil) once told me, "Your taste in shoes is like your taste in dudes: sometimes I see something so revolting that I immediately think, 'Oh man, I should tell Helen about this, she would love it.'" Gimme Gimme Gimme: Gifts For Your Bandmates That Hopefully Won’t Result In Them Taking A Tremendous Pee In Your Coat Closet

Hey everybody, HMXHellion here, freshly plumped with a couple extra pounds of lovin’, cheerfully gained on my Thanksgiving weekend diet, composed of such health-conscious foods as “bacon grease” and “stuff cooked in bacon grease.” After eating enough to feed a bathtub full of panthers, I spent much of the weekend shopping, as, I’m sure, did many of you.  Read full post »

Hell, It Turns Out, IS A Bad Place To Be: Finding A Rehearsal Space

People who know me know that I am not particularly "precious" when it comes to cleanliness. I’ve been known to eat fried chicken that I drunkenly left sitting on a stack of LP’s in my living room overnight... three days later. My desk at work features such interesting detritus as pistachio shells, snapped guitar strings, and at any given moment, at least seven mostly empty Polar seltzer bottles. Read full post »

Husker Don’t: Picking A Band Name And Learning To Live With It

Let’s imagine, for a moment, that you’re deciding what to do on a Friday night. You’ve looked at the schedules for all the venues in your area, and you recognize none of the bands playing, but as a good little Rock Band fan, you are committed to the idea of seeing some live music, however unfamiliar.  Read full post »

Making Prison Tattoos: Concept Art By Kurt Davis

Kurt Davis was among a handful of punk rockers who propped up the Indiana punk scene in the early Eighties.  He befriended the influential Midwest hardcore/punk outfit Zero Boys and in 1982 they chose one of his drawings for the cover of their debut album, Vicious Circle.  Although he never made a cent from it, the album was hugely popular in its day and the original vinyl now commands a hefty bid on eBay. “Most people don’t know about this part of my life,” Davis says in the lobby of Harmonix’s Central Square headquarters in Cambridge Read full post »

Making Publicity Artwork

Rock Band owes its distinctive look to the cadre of talented artists who define not only the clothing, instruments, venues and shell of the game itself but also the artwork that represents the game in newspapers and magazines, on T-shirts and hats, and in many other contexts that are difficult for us to keep track of (although we’re pretty sure there hasn’t yet been an officially sanctioned Rock Band chip clip). Making Shanghai Arena - Concept Art By David Boghdan And Peter Macdonald

“One thing we really wanted to focus on in Rock Band 2 was the finale,” Venue Artist David Boghdan says as he looks over the many concepts and sketches that went into the creation of Shanghai Arena, the last venue in the game.  “We wanted to give people a real sense of accomplishment, and so we decided to structure it around the venue itself.  We wanted it to feel…huger than the other venues.” Read full post »

Making The Nudie Suit - Concept Art By Shawn Witt

Of all the fashion genres covered in Rock Band, the hardest to pin down is also the most obvious: Rock. “It’s not a really clearly defined genre,” says artist Shawn Witt, who was in charge of creating the Ultimate Male Rock Outfit for Rock Band 2. Read full post »
