'70s Hard Rock DLC
Filed under: DLC News / Tags: deep-purple, james-gang, jethro-tull, 1970s, classic-rock, progressive / 53 comments
Three classic slices of hard rock await you in our latest DLC package, all vintage 1970-71. In fact, your humble editor sincerely believes that Deep Purple's "Space Truckin'" is one of the finest tracks of heavy rock ever recorded: Bone-crunching riff? Check. Killer drum solo? Check. Piercing screams? Check and then some (gotta love those high-pitched "Yeah, yeah yeahs" at the end). Throw in a few silly outerspace puns ("We danced around with Borealice.") and you've got a song that helped get many of us through adolescence.
Up next is a song we're sure you've heard, though you may not know by name: "Funk #49" is the greatest hit by the James Gang, the band singer/guitarist Joe Walsh fronted before he joined the Eagles. Funky it is, with a drum part that takes some work to nail; plus killer ticked-off lyrics and a guitar riff you can't forget. Does it sound like the Eagles, you're wondering? Not a bit, though Walsh still does play the song with that band.
Wrapping up the '70s package is Jethro Tull's slam at organized religion, "Hymn 43." This was originally the one and only single from the Aqualung album, though it wound up less famous than other tracks on that disc. Tull guitarist Martin Barre steps out here with a nifty riff that sets up the song's stop-start arrangement; and there's a little taste of Ian Anderson's trademark flute at the very end.
Proving that we love modern music as well, this week we also roll out "Take Back the City," the latest in a string of epics by the Scotland-based Snow Patrol. If your tastes run more to soaring anthems with chiming guitars and earnest vocals, this one will get your blood pumping.
"I Want My, I Want My DLC!"
The songs in Rock Band are only the beginning. Each week we'll be rolling out more downloadable songs, essential tracks (and sometimes whole albums) from every era of rock history. Check the Rock Band website to find out what's new.
Tracks will usually sell for $1.99 each; with three-pack specials costing $5.49. (On the Xbox 360, that's 160 Microsoft Points per track and 440 per three-pack). Occasional special or discounted tracks may cost a dollar more or less.
Downloadable content for the Xbox 360 is available through the XBOX LIVE marketplace. Downloads for the PLAYSTATION 3 version of Rock Band are available through the PLAYSTATION Network Store. In each case, the songs are downloaded onto your hard drive.
If you're playing solo, you can start rocking right away. For head-to-head or multi-player online, all players will need to download the song.
Get ready to rock with the best music school on the planet!

tfrazier...
The reality nowadays is that there's probably 3 attorneys kept busy for every development resource...It's- probably licensing hell between software, console platform, song composer, performing artist, label, and maybe even venue for the live recorded tracks...An end result is probably that the low-hanging fruit tends to get picked first dispite everyone's best attempts to produce what they want to see produced....
I'm a classic rock guy, the Cars album, Judas Preist album, and Boston album were all ringers for me - and I'd welcome anything else on those lines. However, I must admit that some of the newer music has grown on me thru this game. I now have artists on my mp3 player that i never would have imagined 12 months ago..
Thanks for that! Keep up the good work!

From reading all of these comments, I get the feeling that most people don't understand that Harmonix has to put money into licensing the tracks they make, for starters, so I'm sure some of the really well-known songs that if you hear two chords from you'll know instantly... probably cost a lot more than something from the same group that's even only slightly less popular. Then the songs also have to FUN if not challenging above all to play. And then they have to worry about balancing the appeal of their DLC on top of that. Bottom line: these guys have their hands full making new DLC, tattooineman nailed it: don't diss the gift horse (or something), you'll get yours when the time's right.

It kills me to see so many people complaining about the content the Rock Band staff put out there for us to be able to download. I'm not an avid listener to just "any" type of music. I strickly like Hard Rock/Metal (70's and mainly 80s). But, I've found myself realizing that even some of the songs I LOVE from those era's are not as fun to play as others. And visa/versa. I've also been turned onto music/artists that ,before Rock Band, I would have never listened to by choice.
There's nothing wrong with suggesting the music you like, but don't diss other music that other people might like. I now download music that i've never heard of before. There's a good chance I just might like it. :-)

I admit it. I get really excited whenever I see there is good DLC from the 70's. I've been downloading more DLC than I ever have because I got some Microsoft points for Christmas, but these three songs don't really do it for me.
Definitely looking forward to 'Ten' coming out March 24th!
(And as for there being too much Foo Fighters, I disagree. There's about the right amount, they're just not the songs I would have picked.)

I'm sensing some generational hostility here. I'm not entirely sure why because I wasn't born when "Space Truckin'" came out either but if you appreciate heavy music at all you appreciate where it came from and Deep Purple is a prime source of inspiration. You'll be hard pressed to find better rifts then or since. Very hardcore stuff. I will have to agree with there being a Foo Fighters overload though. I like Dave Grohl as much as the next guy but if we are going to see more of him I prefer it be on non-Nevermind Nirvana tracks. While we're at it why don't we go ahead and throw in some Eagles, and why not Queen, Pantera, Led Zepplin, Steve Vai, Suicidal Tendencies, Slayer, White Zombie, Kittie, CCR, Dimmu Borgir, Otep, Rammstein, Ozzy, Sevendust, King Diamond, Slipknot, Quiet Riot, Tool, Primus, Whitesnake, some good Faith No More and Aerosmith and some actual Iron Maiden. On a selfish note I know there is already an entire Judas Priest album, but some more Priest never hurt anyone.

I have to say that this weeks DLC has been the best in a while. And yes I do have both deep purple AND jethro tull on my MP3 Player. I do have to say although "Space Truckin'" is great, I would have much rather had "Locomotive Breath". However, considering we've had Naked Brothers Band, CMT pack, and about a million songs by the Foo Fighters (they're a good band, but this is excessive), this has been the first thing I'll actually downloaded since the Dead Kennedys Pack

So you guys can only get permission to use tracks from bands that no one has actually listened to in 30 years? Do any of you really have any of these three bands on your iPod or in your CD player? I'm all for classics --hell, I am one-- but even the description above for the forgettable "Hymn 43" admits, "...it wound up less famous than other tracks on that disc...". Another glowing recommendation is given for Funk #49, "...a song we're sure you've heard, though you may not know by name". Gee I'm so excited to be getting familiar with Joe Walsh's early work. Maybe since Guitar Hero has the Eagles, this'll be close enough.
Do us a favor, go to Billboard.com, browse the historical charts and pick some songs that were actually in the top 50. Not that chart position is a measure of quality, but these "deep tracks" are kind of a letdown.
