Nothing's Shocking: The Classic Jane's Addiction Album Hits DLC
Filed under: DLC News / Tags: janes-addiction, full-album-pack, 1980s, alternative / 48 comments
There are at least two ways to immerse yourself in vintage Los Angeles decadence…But the safest is to spend a weekend playing Rock Band with the 1988 Jane's Addiction classic, Nothing's Shocking. This alt-rock milestone is the latest to hit Rock Band as a full-album download; an honor we like to give to the most life-changing discs we know.
From the start, the band's vision was kinda dark, kinda sexy and very L.A. At one extreme, the sinister-sounding "Ted, Just Admit It…" bore out singer Perry Farrell's fascination with serial killer Ted Bundy (and gave the album its title). On the other, "Up the Beach" and "Summertime Rolls" sport gentler hallucinogenic imagery, and share a musical theme or two.
In between come classics like "Mountain Song" (already a Rock Band 2 disc song) and "Jane Says," about the real-life Jane and her real-life addiction. Farrell's lowlife vocals and Dave Navarro's guitar heroics have been rightly praised, but rhythm section players can discover how spot-on bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins are. The band chemistry helped Jane's achieve their trademark mix of majestic grandeur with streetwise sleaze. As producer Dave Jerden told Spin magazine, "It felt like our entire culture was in there."
Released in 1988, Nothing's Shocking caused controversy right away; as certain large stores weren't happy with the suggestive cover that Farrell and his girlfriend designed. The flashes of nudity in the "Mountain Song" video didn't help their mainstream case either. Tensions were running so high that the band briefly broke up in the wake of the album's release — but despite their checkered past, Jane's Addiction are still alive and lately reunited. So if you're catching them on tour this summer, let us know if the real Jane's Addiction can rock these songs as well as you can.
Get ready to rock with the best music school on the planet!

icymike u r starting an arrgument that u cant handle.so u might want to keep to your self.and metal is fun.metal music is always chalanging wether ur learning how to play it or writing it thats what makes it fun because unlike most other music u actually have to have speed(in most metal bands). and speed is what makes it metal. and its the vibe of the speed that gets people banging their head.

Not my favorite Jane's Addiction album personally but at least it's good to see a full album of a good band and not, for example, Chinese Democracy. I've always loved "Jane Says" and had a blast playing the other songs from this album. Congratulations- Harmonix, the victory is yours, and to the victor goes the spoils, and the spoils is money.

No, seriously, I am apoplectic. I feel like a blind man who is seeing for the first time. I want to cry because this DLC was missing from my life up until now.

OK, I just downloaded ths album, and I am prepared to say it. Nothing Shocking DLC is perhaps the greatest thing to happen to humanity since the polio vaccine or perhaps, burger shots. My point is, I now what I will be doing with all my free time for the rest of May (and since I am unemployed, that means ALL my time). Can you say Album Challenge on Expert Drums? God help me.

It seems a big portion metal fans are pretty musically ignorant. It's alway "We need more metal!!! Not this crap!!" or "Why does Harmonix release this crap?! Where's the metal?!?" It's called diversity. Try it. Be a little more understanding of other's musical tastes. A lot of people may think metal's crap. But those people respect your tastes and don't insult you for it.

IcyMike, you have guts. Well done. I like some metal, but agree that it's usually no fun to scream, er, I mean sing.
I took a look at the complete list of available songs, and was surprised that about 100 of the current 673 are listed in either the Metal or Numetal genres. I guess one could argue whether or not Round and Round or Dr. Feelgood can really be considered Metal, but it certainly seems that Harmonix is doing their best to provide players with balance. Check it out, you might be surprised.

ATTENTION PEOPLE! Please quit asking for metal songs! I'm gonna say what the gamemakers want to say, but can't. Metal songs don't sell. Why? #1 Age demographic: 16-21, yes. 0-15 and 22-death, not so much. #2 Social demographic: plainly speaking, people who like metal are less likely to afford a $300 game system (plus DLC costs) because metal is geared toward the disenfranchised- (poorer- and less educated for you youngsters). #3 Singing factor: People are less likely to buy a song that's no fun to sing. And face it, metal is not fun to sing. #4 Difficulty level: Songs that are impossible to play are bad sellers. And most metal songs are just that. Sorry, that's just a fact. RB is trying to amass the best collection of bands it possibly can, but it still has to make money. That means some staple bands you just have to have. Remember kids, it's called ROCK band. Not METAL band. Kudos for the JA, Allman Bros., and the upcoming Beatles. Keep up the good work guys!

That's it? I mean, thanks for acknowledging that I'm right about something, but geesh, where's the gusto? "everything else you said was crap" doesn't exactly force me to question my perception of reality.
Look, I'm just having a bit of fun at your expense, and I should apologize. I just don't like bullies, and have a knee-jerk response to anything I perceive as intolerance, hatred, or arrogance. I am sorry if I overreacted.
I'm curious to know your opinion of something. Let's take it as read that "Jane Says" is played on light rock stations. If that is so, I think it's pretty cool that my arch-conservati- ve- father can be going for a filling and hear a song about a heroin addict who keeps promising herself, "I'm gonna kick tomorrow," over the dentist's office speakers while the novocaine takes effect. I think that's downright subversive, and would think that even if I didn't like the song. Agree or disagree?

prufrock...
theblazer, please realize that my response to you was not a critique of your musical taste. As I said, I love the song, "Love Will Tear Us Apart." I merely meant to show that you weren't consistent in the type of music you didn't like, and therefore your argument about "easy listening" radio stations was invalid.
If you think someone is a "balding loser" for enjoying a particular kind of music, you have no concept of music history or of music itself. Also, you open yourself up to the same attack. You're an insecure child who wants to feel superior to others simply because you have a keyboard and a mouse and the ability to use hurtful language.
Also, you have no idea what the word "penultimate" means, do you? Let me help you out there. It means second to last or second to most. If you want to sound intelligent, using big words is not a substitute for actual intelligence.
It's sad that you're such a bully, because I'd much rather talk about how much I like Joy Division.

I love this Album! Jane's Addiciton was one of my favourite bands in the 90's. I was at the first Lollapalooza back in 1991 with NIN, BodyCount... Can't wait to see the NIN/JA tour this June. Thanks for putting this out!

hey prufrock... I wasn't commenting on that idiot's opinions for one. It was just a general judgment of why he/she decided to utter anything at all from his/her small brain. Number two, what does my taste in music have to do with any of this? If you wanna go there, you listen to rubbish. Number three, I don't think its common to hear joy division on light radio stations at all. However, "jane says" is the penultimate balding loser chill out song.
So yeah, enjoy listening to crap you stupid idiot.

Seeing them this summer, and I'm so stoked. These songs are total win on all instruments, and I'm so glad I get to see the band live. Also, listening to Dave Navarro's radio show as I type this. The man is awesome.

Thrasher9294...
I''ll say it again. Just because you don't like the music doesn't mean others do.
It's all opinion based, but we can't seem to have that anymore.
Either way, what's wrong with a few more mainstream songs? I'm fine until they start releasing Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend, or Rap. Then I'll have to kill myself.

prufrock...
Hey theblazer... Your DLC wishlist includes Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. I like that song too, but easy listening and light rock stations are way more likely to play that than, say, Pigs in Zen, or Ted, Just Admit It, or Ocean Size, or as a matter of fact almost any song on Nothing's Shocking. It's nice that you think you have a take, but for God's sake you could at least try to be consistent.
rvditore has an opinion you don't agree with. Fine. The same principle that entitles you to your opinion entitles rvditore to his/hers. Why resort to calling someone an idiot just because you disagree? I hope you're not really that insecure, but so far the evidence suggests that you are.

theblazer...
In reference to the guy below me, rvditore... WTF are you talking about? Just because you have a keyboard and an internet connection... that doesn't make it fine for you to act like you're a musical prophet for your generation. "A band that doesn't get enough credit"? Jane's Addiction? Light rock stations play Jane's Addiction. You're an idiot and so is Harmonix for shoving the same stuff down our throats as easy listening radio stations do. blazer out.

rvditore...
"Nothing's Shocking" DLC wraps up a good week for Jane's Addiction. Headlingling Lollapalooza, a career-spanning- box set, and now we can fake rock-out to some punk rock that was meant to be played big and loud. It's probably a band that doesn't get enough credit, but they, along cohort Trent Reznor blazed a trail that leads directly to Nirvana.
Now that rock is the new underground, keep an eye on the indie acts going today that are perfect Rock Band foils:
The Hold Steady
The Decemberists
TV on the Radio
Keep up the good work

This is an album I like to blast when I'm washing my car and I feel like ****ing off the neighbors. I've been waiting (im)patiently for it to finally be released, and now I can hardly believe that tomorrow (for PS3) is the day. Seeing some of my favorite albums released - Ten, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, The Colour and the Shape, Doolittle, and now Nothing's Shocking - is truly great. If Harmonix decides to release The Joshua Tree, OK Computer, and/or Dark Side of the Moon sometime in the future, I may begin to suspect that they can read my mind (or my requests, at least).
I play with my wife and daughter, and the greatest thing about playing is introducing my kid to the music that I listened to when I was her age. I was thirteen when Nothing's Shocking was released, and I remember my friend and I sneaking into his dad's car and playing the tape, very quietly, and (yes, I'll admit it) staring at the cover. Thank you, Harmonix. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.

i was wondering how you guys at harmonix were gonna release the album cover, but from the looks of it censorship strikes again, but, i understand why, i don't think the rest of that cover is a t rated thing, so the albums here thats what matters most, good job Harmonix, keep up the good work.

I must admit, I was not exactly aware of this album when it was announced for release way back. I was initially skeptical, but after looking into it, I must admit it was a good album choice. The amount of variety in the album actually did (sorry...have to) shock me. Great stuff all around.
Awesome article on the background info of the album as well Brett.

tiagoduarte,
My friends and I are all in our early 30s. Not all of us are spoiled little children that have mommy and daddy buying us expensive gaming systems and games and then still aren't happy because we can't get the music we want. Maybe the reason you complain like a little ***** is because you ARE a little *****. :)
We *love* when some classic 70s and 80s stuff pops up. As long as it's not ALL 70s and 80s stuff. Go play the Spongebob DLCs that you no doubt had mommy and daddy pay for as soon as it was released. Oh, and stop wetting the bed.

Stevenyoung...
Awesome. This is one of the best alternative rock albums ever. Good to see it added. I can not wait to play along to "Ted Just Admit It...". Now a couple of tracks from Ritual would be complete this picture.
We need "Been Caught Stealing" and "Stop" at least.
Also I bet most RB2 players were alive in 1988. It is silly to think that more than half the people playing this game are less than twenty-one years old. Especially when you consider the price tag.
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
tiagoduarte...
Sigh.. Every week I come here and complain like a little *****, but god damn, most RB2 players weren't even BORN in 88...
