Prog, Punk, and Power: A Perfect Package of DLC

prog_punk_power_dlc.jpg

A much wiser man than us (we think it may have been Abe Vigoda) once claimed that all great forms of music begin with a P. Keeping that in mind, we're proud to present a DLC package full of prog, punk, pop, and, uh…power metal? Sure!

Black Tide certainly fit that last description, and heavy metal's "new teen titans" (that's what Rolling Stone called 'em) hit big with their debut album, thanks to scorching tracks like "Shockwave" and "Warriors of Time" (already in Rock Band) and now "Show Me the Way" - already a hit in our Rock Band Unplugged game, now here in fully plugged glory.

The all-female L7 (already represented in Rock Band by the massive "Pretend We're Dead") were one of the toughest and funnest bands to come out of LA in the early '90s. "Andres" was the followup that got airplayed on hipper stations - gotta love that out of control vocal. Asked who Andres was, the band once replied "He was a really nice guy and we kept doing things to him." Use your imagination, but he did appear in the song's original video.

Finally, it's definitely a big week for prog-heads: You've already grooved to Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son," this week we unveil the followup hit "Point of Know Return" and the ultra-tricky epic, "Icarus Borne on Wings of Steel." Both are live versions taken from the late-'70s album Two For the Show; as the band explained in our recent interview, even they were surprised to listen back and hear how fast they played.

If you want to show off even more, try navigating "Satch Boogie" and "Surfing With the Alien" by the king of the shredders, Joe Satriani. Both feature plenty of firepower from the man who once claimed that he decided to be a guitarist on the day Jimi Hendrix died. Satriani is now in the supergroup Chickenfoot with Sammy Hagar.

Where do Blink-182 fit into all this? Anywhere they feel like! "What's My Age Again?" probably has a different answer nowadays, since the band first released that tune a full decade ago. Just energized from last summer's reunion tour, Blink-182 are back in a big way, and drummer Travis Barker recently told MTV that we can expect something "heavy" when the band goes back into the studio. We expect nothing less.

Yeah, Satriani is not my favorite, I really don't like "show off songs". He is a master of his craft, but I prefer song structures and timing... So, Chickenfoot would be perfect for me.
