Beer for Your Horses (And Metal for Yo' Mama): Toby Keith, Black Tide, Bullet For My Valentine and The Shins

toby.jpg

This week we at Rock Band have just one important question to ask: "Who's Your Daddy?" Or to put it more specifically: What other game would give you a six-pack of Toby Keith hits, and release dark metal and alternative pop gems on the same day?

This week's centerpiece is a stack of tracks by that honky-tonkin', flag-wavin', all-American superstar Toby Keith. You may have heard the political songs that topped the charts a few years back, or the softer ballads that appear on his albums. But we went with the most Rock Band-friendly side of Toby—namely, the rowdy and rocking side. So these six songs cover a run of hits from 1993 ("Should've Been a Cowboy," the opening track on his debut album) to last year's hit single "She's a Hottie." In between come a few tales of romantic misadventure and the classic drinking song "I Love This Bar"—Feel free to grab all your friends to do the chorus more accurately. The most political song here is "Beer for My Horses," which marks the Rock Band debut of another American icon—Ladies and gentlemen, Willie Nelson.

For more info on Toby Keith, check out his website.

In no other universe will you find those songs alongside "Waking the Demon," the biggest song by Bridgend, Wales' main contribution to metal: Bullet For My Valentine. The song's all about being bullied at school until you can't take it anymore, then turning around and unleashing the f%^&ing fury. A sharp-eyed poster on our forums already pointed out a nifty coincidence regarding this song: In the video for "Waking the Demon," the hero goes to his calendar and crosses off April 3—which was the very day we announced the DLC release. Ah, the prophetic power of metal.

"Warriors of Time" marks the second Rock Band appearance of teenaged metal sensations Black Tide, and we recommend this to all world-class RB players: Our playtesters have unanimously declared this one of the toughest songs to hit the game in months, with a guitar solo that's definitely not for the fainthearted. That's the last time we ever make light of a band with a 15-year-old guitarist.

On a much lighter side of things, Albuquerque's Shins have long been a favorite of indie-rockers with a '60s fetish. You may recognize "New Slang" from the various ads it has appeared on, but it's better to let the song's rich melody carry you to a hazy, dayglo corner of the not-too-distant past.

I just want to say THANKS for the different groups/catigori- es- of music you are putting out. Playing the same type of music gets boring after a while..you know, as your mood changes your choice of songs change. There are alot of bands on here that I have never heard of but am willing to listen to to see if I like, I wont put down others choice of music people may have, for we are all different and thus, liking different things. If we didn't, this would be a boring world! I love Country to Metal and love changing geers during game play. I would love to see more country now that I have been lidtening to it more on the radio. I would also like to hear more of the 80s glam rock/metal such as Posion and Skid Row. I was glad you put Motley Crew on RB. I will let you know that not just the 16-26 yo are playing the game, I am 48 yo and rocking right along with them..and my grandchildren..LOL. I am playing expert level on songs such as Down With The Sickness, Toxicity and the Toby Keith son

yes to go with what rocky road said, everyone doesn't like the same songs. for inrest reason i pick song that i think every one will enjoy, here of some examples of good songs almost every one likes
-let there be rock
-spoonman
-everlong
-hello there

and now songs that you pick every single time you get on quickplay, and others can't stand

-shoulder to the plow (no offense HMX)
-down with the sickness
-chop suey (yes to you metal heads, this is the song that will make me quit on the spot, i used to like this song until you guys just couldn't stop playing over and over again.)

to conclude don't think that your favorite song is everyones favorite, my favorite song is get clean, but its not my constant pick.

Toby Keith: Track Pack
Come on. Really? Toby Keith? Was it really worth satisfying the minority of rednecks playing RB while letting down those with a unique and decent taste in music? What really gets me is that you gave him a full track pack.

The Shins: New Slang
I'll admit I'm a Shins fan, but this is about the worst choice of song from them possible. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the song very much but this is not fun to play. It seems lately its either a good song but no fun to play or it's a fun to play song but the is garbage. Perhaps a better choice might have been "Caring Is Creepy" or "Spilt Needles".

Black Tide: Warriors Of Time
We get it, they're like like 15 years old and can play their instruments well, Shockwave was enough. They're just too much of a generic metal band to enjoy them. Age is irrelevant.

Bullet For My Valentine: Waking The Demon
Not a fan of the band however they have a large fan base and had no songs on RB prior to this release. This one is acceptable.

every week all Spanish comunity of Rock Band has just one important question to ask: when we got to go some Spanish tracks in Rock Band?

Latin America and Spain have a decades long history of enjoying and making original rock n' roll, and since Spanish is the language with the second most native speakers.

We finally have ONE song in Spanish, Platero y Tu's "Hay Poco Rock n' Roll". One has to wonder if HMX is aware of the irony in the title (it translates to "there's little rock n' roll" for our non-Spanish speaking friends.) At my place we change the lyrics to "Hay Poco Rock en Español". Big thanks to HMX though, hopefully we will see more Spanish tracks down the road, maybe something from more seminal and well-known bands.

theres lots of good spanish tracks
Heroes Del Silencio - Entre Dos Tierras
Soda Stereo - Perciana Americana
Miguel Mateos - Cuando Seas Grande
we hope can play it on rock band

kissfan09

I would love if you could release a Kiss pack. The three songs that would be great in RB2 would be, "Love Gun", "Shock Me" and "Strutter". Also seeing Hearts Burst Into Fire by Bullet for my Valentine. I also noticed you haven't any Green Day songs. They are a hugely popular punk band and it would be great to see them in RB2.

it's not a question of who likes what. Harmonix should be putting out stuff that rocks. and guess what? No Doubt and Toby Keith don't. If they put out say... Orange Juice... people would be like, "what is this?" and then make an opinion good or bad. But if they maintain this unrelenting tide of pop bull**** we've all heard and it's half and half accepted, there will always be people ****ed off... like me. **** you harmonix.

Nonliving101...

Nonliving101

Yeah true all of our interests are opinions...but i agree with domins wolf, you guys at Harmonix should add some Rise Against. Perhaps something from "The Sufferer and the Witness" or something from "Appeal to Reason." If i had to personally choose, I'd pick Survive, Kotov Syndrome, and Collapse (Post Amerika) ;) "Life isn't like this..."

So, like, umm when is Led Zepplen going to be announced? Queen? Steve Vai? More Police? And I'd be really happy if the "not-classic-ro- ck-or-metal"- category were filled with some They Might Be Giants or Paul Simon or Billy Joel. . .
Heck, please hurry up with converting the Megadeth album! Oh well, different strokes, etc etc.

Nonliving101

Cool, Toby Keith's cool...and the metal's nice. I love how you guys at Harmonix keep bringing home the bacon (lmao); however, can you guys add some more Journey? Adding Don't Stop Believin' was a an amazing idea, but thts not exactly a hard song to play, not to mention fast (nothing wrong with tht though)....mayb- e- add something more robust like "Only the Young?" Anyways apart from my desires, it would probaly be a good idea to add some more popular songs that people have heard about from almost anywhere and from any person. For example, "Decode" by Paramore. I think that songs alright and i'm not a Twilight fan, but thats what realed in the money. If you can add more songs that a majority of people like, then you will gain hella more fans (as if ya need em). Anyways, you guys are doing an awesome job, with add ons like "All I want" and "Shining Star." Keep up the awesome work dudes!

Thrasher9294...

Thrasher9294

Sorry for the double comment as well, but Rocky Road, the reason that they don't release the same tracks for Wii is because of how unalike it's system format is compared to the 360 and PS3. If they didn't have to double the workload to get the Wii tracks in, they would be able to release the Wii tracks at the same time.

Personally I do like the choices for this week!
I would prefer MORE of Bullet for my Valentine than just one song, I think these guys deserve a track pack or album to download!
I would love to see :
"Hit The Floor", "Room 409", "Tears Dont Fall", "Disappear", and "Scram Aim Fire"
These songs would make my week! (not to mention the week of all the other metal lovers out there!)

HeavyHorse

Yeah...easy on the complaints there bud.

Anyways I'm glad you guys released something non country fans could grab and love. I appreciate Keith, but I never said anything about liking him :P. Still, it's cool you guys are spicing up the variety Rock Band has to offer, something I've never seen elsewhere.

I'm digging the metal picks though. "Waking the Demo" was the first song I heard by the band awhile back on the radio. Even after going through their available stuff, it's still my favorite song. Great job picking that one.

And as Npeaen put it, "Warrior's of Time" sounds a lot like the Power Ranger's theme. Absolutely insane solo though, that kid's gonna go places. Definitely got some good stuff this week, even for the non country fan like myself.
